valve covers

I was wondering how many different types of valve covers have been manufactured. I know that the thin ones are tin or steel that can be chromed and that some are aluminum that can be polished, but did they also make some that are like pop or pot metal that really could only be painted. Mine are thicker but does not seem to be aluminum.
