Legal, but for how long?

About four months ago I noticed towers adjacent to class B querying me about my altitude. It has become almost routine, but I didn't really notice - what is more natural than wanting to know the altitude of a no transponder Cub?

Found out today it is not the curious tower controller - it is approach control. They are now apparently assuming that any no transponder aircraft is in fact in class B, and need verification and N- number.

This is brand new - presumably in response to some awful occurrence we have not yet heard of. Keep your eyes and ears open - the next step is a change in our grandfather provisions. This is not totally within class Delta - it is approaching or departing. Good luck to those of us without engine driven generators. We are apparently a serious threat.
