I am sure some of you saw my thread on SC dot org. Apparently the only definition of a short approach is in the controller's handbook, and is simply a way to request that you expedite.
Our tower gets requests all the time - mostly from Cherokee students - for "short approach." They (the Cherokees) then make their base leg one mile from the threshold instead of two. This is educating, in an informal way, the tower folks. They are beginning to expect such a request, at least from Cherokees, if an approach is to be less than that required by a 737. If I am number one, I execute a Piper Cub approach, even if I am in a Mooney. Puts me on final about 3/8 of a mile from the threshold.
So far, the only definition I have heard for a "short approach" is that the base leg can be at or before the abeam point.
Any further wisdom here?
