I am pleased to announce that after a trip to the Greensboro FSDO this week to pick up my new airworthiness certificate, the Piper J3F-50 that I have spent the last two years restoring took to the skies today for her first official flight.
Work was actually completed around the first of November, but the process of finalizing paperwork and clearing some registration errors made by the CAA (FAA) in the 1950's took some time to complete. It was a necessary evil as it would have been a shame to restore the airplane and leave the paperwork a mess.
The airplane that started life on June 21, 1940 with just a Franklin 50hp engine has undgergone a full restoration to better than new quality. It is now powered by a Continental C-85/O-200 stroker built by Don Swords of Don's Dream Machines. Everything on the airplane has been replaced or overhauled to better than new condition- to ensure that the airplane will remain around for another 70 years.
The first flight went off without a hitch- the power from the stroker was very strong and the airplane flew perfectly straight.
I want to thank my Dad and all of my friends who help make this all possible- I couldnât have done it without them.
Iâve attached a few pics- enjoy!
