Hi All,
While attending a recent holiday party, I met a woman who recounted a plane crash in her backyard as a child. She was under the impression that the crashed airplane was a 'Piper Cub' - which piqued my curiosity - but didn't remember any other details. She mentioned having newspaper clippings of the event in a family scrap book, and promised to send it to me when she had a chance. She did that over the weekend, and it was indeed a Piper Cub! Some research indicates that the two CFI's took off without adequately securing the oil fill cap, and that oil splashing on the hot exhaust caused them to believe the engine was on fire! They clipped a pine tree during the 'emergency' return to the airport!
I wonder what happened to the careers of these young CFI's? Both men appear in the FAA airman database, and one is still in the local area! The airport, Tew-Mac, has been gone for almost 30 years now...!
