I’ve had the champion REM 40 E spark plugs in the C90 since I’ve owned it for three years. It’s always passed the mag run ups. At altitude ( okay, Cub altitude) it seemed to run a little bit rough. My IA has never done annual resistance tests. Based on tribal knowledge that appears to be extremely common.

I thought mid year I would get them cleaned and run a resistance test. Based on the 5000 ohms maximum rule of thumb only one of the spark plugs passed the resistance test. In fact, one was 125,000 ohms.

I purchased the Tempest equivalent spark plugs. Previously the startups were always fast. With the Tempest plugs starts seem instantaneous.

After returning from the first maintenance flight, I found that the idle RPM had gone up 200 RPM.

Apparently champion has modified their spark plugs since the ones we had were manufactured in 2014. The older version plug is reportedly easily identified by the screwdriver slot viewed from the top.

FYI/I think I might very well have been miss reading winter time rough running for carb ice and unnecessarily applying carb heat. Just my thought after the fact. I’ll know more after flying this winter.
