There were recently questions asked about the FA kits in use during WWII. The appropriate manual for such things is FM 21-11 First Aid For Soldiers. My copy is dated April of 1943. The illustration shows the design in use at the time, which would seem to be the one with a projecting pocket on the front. I would hazard a guess that they deleted the pocket on later models as the kit contents were changed. They also seemed to specialize based on the theater as I have seen Jungle kits and cold weather kits and gas casualty only kits, etc. Anyway, here is what they had mid-war. Both of my examples of the extra pocket type have a rubberized fabric. Almost a polished cotton with a very tight weave as opposed to canvas.
