One of the J-3's I rent periodically has a trim "slippage" problem.
I'm fond of the family that runs the airport. They're highly-regarded J-3 mechanics, but the problem persists after several annuals and 100-hr inspections.
It might be that it occurs only with two aboard, but this year my sample size is too small to say. Last year I was coming home from a cross country and realized my right forearm was going numb from holding a lot of stick pressure. Inconvenient and certainly not a good way to fly. I can "reengage" the trim if I pull the throttle and go to best glide, but once I reestablish cruise it will fail to engage again.
I haven't stuck my nose into that part of a Cub to be able to picture the problem. I assume the leading edge of the horizontal stab is involved. Can somebody explain what's going on?
