First let me state I'm not a very good writer, but there are a few things id like to convey to other flying enthusiast and hear comments from them.
Yesterday, Easter, after all most all of the family left the farm I was beginning to think about work and a few problems I had to deal with this week, it was really beginning to stress me out. I was trying to listen to my friend Gene, who was still there after dinner. I wasn't really paying attention to him until I heard him say "Luscombe". He was in reference to an airplane that he and I have bought together and fixed up this winter, he had not flown it yet and wondered if I would take him up and let him fly it for a while since he was not comfortable with soloing it. Now he had my full attention. After an approving eye roll from my wife, We were out the door and headed to the barn. The flight was fun and noneventfull, just the way we like them, however after returning to the house alone and talking to my wife for a while, I really started to become overwhelmed with the work week coming up and all there was to do to get ready for the spring planting. Then it all came together.... Stress, depression, anxiety, nerves, age, or whatever is going on in your head, all gets left on the ground. Flying the aircraft is something that demands all of your mental capacity and forces you to take a break. Flying is just hard enough that it is a challenge, but its achievable. Its something that most people haven't learned to do and you have, Its something that you can constantly improve, and its something that you can share.
I have often referred to this as a cult and commented about having an affair with an airplane, but I think its more important than that and its important to me that I be able to do it. It's a temporary pause on life and a little bit of an escape, you know how small your house looks from up there? well I think it does the same thing for your problems, at the very least it gives you better perspective. Maybe because you are futher away from life and a little closer to God.
In conclusion id like to encourage you all to keep flying and if you get a chance .... Share it with others , family, friends, the neighbor kids, and don't ever forget to take some of the older ramp rats from the local airport up for a while. I wouldsuspect its as important for them as it is for you.
Thank you God for giving me the opportunity to fly,
Now.... lets here your reason for flying
Thanks, Tim
