A couple of friends of mine got together and paid too much for a yellow J3 that, at a glance, needs paint, rudder bushings and weighed. The W&B sheet in the file has a different aircraft’s N and serial number.

I have gotten spoiled at home because I just set the scale on a pallet and level the airplane with a forklift. I am having trouble coming up with a stable portable solution to weigh the tail. I have a small workbench I can use for a starting point but it’s only about half as tall as I need.

My other option would be to bring the airplane to the forklift. Not my favorite option since the previous owner sold a technically unairworthy airplane for $40+K.

Buyer beware! I shudder to think what other paperwork I am going to have to fix for these kids. Neither of the current owners are tailwheel pilots yet and their CFI won’t get in the airplane with a bad weight and balance. I wouldn’t mind moving it for them except I worry about insurance issues myself.
