I ended up with a worn jackscrew on my PA-18, requiring replacement (thanks Bob Turner for the advice). Not sure what caused the wear, but it brings to mind an issue concerning proper trimming technique. I've been flying airplanes since 1964, spent nearly 39 years in the airline business flying many types of aircraft. One item that was stressed in every aircraft was correct trimming procedure. Always unload the control forces, then adjust the trim. It bothered me when pilots would utilize the electric stab trim as an initial corrective control input. We've had discussions here with Cub pilots who complain about trim cable slippage when attempting to trim out adverse control forces. As we all know the longitudinal trim system on the J-3 is not the same, more effective one used on the PA-18 and can cause headaches if not adjusted properly. Unloading the unwanted control forces first, then trimming should be accomplished in all a/c, including the Cub. Gary
