Yep - a 450 Stearman - Pratt &Whitney R-985

The question: We have backfires at idle that scared me badly enough that I had the owner shut down and tow it back. I believe it is an i duction system leak, since I could see flashes by my left foot, and nothing coming out of the exhaust stack on the right.

Maintenance has not been able to look at it, and I am not going to - but if any of you have had this experience, a few hints would be appreciated.

We got six hours in it before this happened, and it could be that our starting procedures need work. But man, once it gets going it is like a rocket-powered elevator.
