“Ridges obscured”…the weather report you don’t want to hear, especially if you fly in the Shenandoah Valley between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Range. That was what we had yesterday. Gloom. But monitoring the Winchester AWAS it finally became apparent that the ceiling had gone up to about 1,000 feet, with ten miles visibility underneath. Who cares about the ridges, I’ll just fly up and down the valley! So that’s what I did, for about 1.5, exploring along the west ridge looking for gaps (ha) and then down the base of the Blue Ridge to Luray. On the way back, I poked around Skyline Drive, and in the last picture you can see the road (cut in the trees) going up into the clouds. All in all a great day for flying, but I was the only traffic at Front Royal all day!
