Q - How did Piper fasten metal ribs to a wood spar? Nails? Screws? Etc? As I see it, since wing ribs are loose on a spar, that fastening system in single shear has to hold up the airplane. I'm repairing an Aeronca Chief & I'v been told the tiny nails are only to space the ribs.

And how much spar damage is permissible from the rib fastening system?
