I’m on my 3rd J3.
The first was a Reed clipped wi g with an 85 stroker no elevator bungee. The elevator was very heavy and if memory serves it wouldn’t trim any slower than 65 mph or so at idle. I attributed this to the higher speeds of a clipped wing and the heavier engine.
The second was full span wings with an A65 and the PA-11 bungee setup. I don’t recall what it would trim to but I believe it was plenty slow for a nice slow 45-50 mph final approach in trim.
My current cub is full span wings, C85, Sensenich 76AK-2-42 prop and the slowest it will trim at idle is 62 mph. I’ve checked the yoke it is correct and allows the stab to reach the longeron for full nose up trim. My power off stall is 37 solo so the airspeed seems pretty accurate. I like to approach around 50-55 normally or 45 short field and I’m not a fan of flying out of trim.
The question is, can a PA-11 elevator bungee be installed on a flying (covered) airplane? I see the pulley bolts to the frame aft and above the yoke. Is that bolt hole on a J3 or does it involve welding?
Thanks,
Ty
