Just to give you a little background on the instigators of this new venture, it is worthwhile to note that many of the founders are participating members and/or officers past and present of the Florida Antique Biplane Association, Inc. which has been operating in Florida for over ten years. So, we are not new to this type venture and have a proven record of success building and operating a flying group. We plan to build on that success and use the lessons learned to jump start the Florida Cub Flyers.
The Directors/Officers for FCF the first year of operation will be determined by volunteers. Well have six Director/Officer slots. If more volunteers step forward than there are slots available, well have an election of the dues paying membership to determine who will fill the slots.
There will be an Executive Director, who will be a member of the Board of Directors. The Exec will operate the corporation on a day to day basis.
What aviation doesnt need is another newsletter/magazine organization. However, we will have a newsletter distributed via the Internet to keep everyone abreast of whats happening. Rene St. Julien ([email protected]) will be the editor and welcomes any contributions. Youve already received Issue #1. Meeting announcements will also be distributed via the Internet. A name for the newsletter will be established by a majority vote of the dues paying membership.
Florida Cub Flyers intends to be a flying group that will provide the members with the opportunity to fly their Cubs to unique and different locations and meet with like minded folks. We already have volunteers to host gatherings at private airstrips and this option will be utilized once we get our liability insurance in place and the corporation formed. In the meantime, well be meeting at public use airports like River Ranch.
The name of our group is temporarily the Florida Cub Flyers. A name to be used for incorporation as a 501C6/non profit corporation will be determined by a vote of the membership. "Non profit" is the key word here. There are no paid positions within the organization and 100% of the dues will be allocated to operating the group. A complete accounting of monies collected and spent will be available to any member. The Directors will receive an accounting on a monthly basis from the Treasurer.
We will be an official chapter of the Antique Airplane Association, Inc. and as such be able to obtain a rider on their liability insurance policy.
For insurance purposes, our meetings will be private and open to only members and potential members ( invited Cub owners). Our meetings WILL NOT be open to the general aviation population primarily due to liability issues.
Meeting frequency will ultimately depend on volunteer hosts and monies available. Well plan at least two regional gatherings the first year at public use airports. The private site gatherings will fill in between these meetings once insurance is in place. It will be the goal to fund the private site gatherings from the treasury. In this way the hosts are not burdened with the cost of inviting the group to their home airstrips. More on this funding as the membership numbers and dues picture becomes clearer.
As for dues, it will require at least $1000 to fund the group for the first year. This will cover initial start up costs, insurance and incorporation.
Once we receive a firm commitment from the founders of the group, the Directors will determine the dues amount per membership. Each membership will include two persons, one for each seat of the Cub. Those two may be husband and wife, wife and boyfriend, boyfriend and boyfriend or any combination.
WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
The Florida Antique Biplane Association, Inc. has a dues structure of $48 per year per member. We have about 100 members on a continuing basis. With that financial capability, we have 4-6 private site gatherings per year. At these meetings we reimburse the hosts $20 per membership attending (2 people). With this financial base we also fund the running of the corporation and insurance costs.
The Florida Cub Flyers can be operated on a similar basis. Or, we can scale back the program to accommodate a less expensive dues structure. You will be polled to see what your thoughts are regarding the issue.
The less money we have to operate, the fewer the meetings well have. We learned early on with the Florida Antique Biplane Association not to depend on donations to fund these meetings. It is quite simple. Fun costs money.
