Anyone who reads this,
I am currently on active duty in the US Navy and stationed in Bahrain. I have wanted to fly for as long as I can remember, and managed to pass my private checkride before leaving for boot camp in 2005. My dad has been a classic car nut for ever, but lately has struck an interest in my flying. He has always been drawn towards the J-3 cub, and I have to admit that so have I. So we have made the decision to restore a cub. Sounds simple enough I guess. I think the hardest part is finding out where to start. My dad has restored a few cars and his work is emaculate and outstanding. I am an electrician on P-3's, and have some wood working experience. I also have been very involved with the EAA since 1995, when I was 11. I know plenty of A&Ps, and I even have a good friend at an engine shop. My main concern is what do I look for in a project plane. We aren't made of money, but we want to buy something that has a chance of flying again someday. What kind of timeline are we looking at for the restoration, is this something that can be restored over the course of a winter, working weekends out in the garage? How hard is it to get the aircraft certified, insured, etc....
I know my questions may seam a little vague, and maybe I am just looking for a little confidence builder. I know we can do it, I am just starving for more knowledge about it. Any advice on books or other references would be greatly appreciated!
