I have a C90-8 we put in my 46 cub 7 years ago.
It was completely overhauled with new Millennium (sp) jugs.
The steel was sent out and overhauled and the case was sent to Divco.
I took it to a friend, an AI, who has a small FBO and has overhauled many small Continental engines and had a very good reputation.

The engine now has 130 hrs since it was overhauled.

Last year during an oil change I noticed a bunch of grey/silvery sludge stuck to the magnet in the drain plug. We checked the screen and it did not show anything other than a couple of very small specks of metal.
My Local mechanic was concerned but thought lets keep an eye on it and see what we see at the next oil change.
Well today we had the same thing and when I drained the oil in the sunlight it looked grey; not a good sight.
We pulled the left two jugs off and found the second lobe/lifter from the rear was worn and the lifter had very noticeable deep scratches in it. My mechanic said that is where all the metal is coming from and I agree.

So we are going to take it apart and see what needs to be done.

My question, is this not quite unusual for the small continentals?
It is true that it has not flown that much, 130hrs in 7 years and spends much/most of the winter in an unheated hanger. I have been using CamGuard for the past couple of years but If I recall that was after the first sign of that grey sludge in the magnet.

Thanks,
Tom
