Hello everyone, I am still going through our J-3s first annual as owners (it’s been ongoing all winter) and I just keep finding more and more as I dig deeper. My question today is regarding the lift struts. I found a ton of surface corrosion and pitting after a hunch made me remove a very hastily done paint job. I found that the previous owner had simply painted over the existing corrosion without treating it more than sanding only. It runs nearly the entire length of all struts and on all sides. The deepest pitting is about 16th ish deep but it is everywhere. I got through exploring one aft strut about 25% before I just gave up. Needless to say I think addressing the corrosion is a loosing battle and am looking for options to replace. Obviously there are the Univair sealed struts but I also know there is a A. Dodge STC for PA-18 struts. Ontop of the AGC sells aluminum struts now for for the super cub (with its own STC) specifically to address the corrosion issue with steel struts. They are also the same price and significantly lighter than the steel struts. Does anyone know if these struts could be installed on the J-3 using both STCs?
