Hi guys, for those interested in this kind of stuff, these are some details from an original L-4 gear leg that I recently purchased, believed to be a Piper spare part. The covering is fairly tattered.

Color: OD topside, Gray bottom side

Gear leg tubing is Black paint.

Wood plug in the inner axle.

Lower axle covering is entirely closed with fabric. When I recovered my gear, I left it open for better air circulation and inspection, since I was flying on skis at the time. How do you guys cover your gear legs?

Blue insignia stencil PI--CD4--PD3. Thanks to Paul Smith, this is decoded as PI = Piper, CD4 = 4 coats (cross coats) of clear dope, and PD3 = 3 coats of Pigmented dope.

There is no tape along the top edge of the gear leg that parallels the fuselage.

There is a tear drop shape reinforcement patch of some type for where the brake tubing comes through the fabric. It seems thicker than a tape, and there's no pinked edges.
