Going to preliminary look at a nearby J-5A for a friend in Texas this weekend. I've pulled the TCDS and studied what is approved on it. Will check logs for document and undocumented stuff (which most all old plane have to some degree). While I'm good with general condition and looking for stuff like longerons, is there anything J-5 specific to look for that being J-3 minded I wouldn't think to look for?

This plane does have what is called a "Cub door" mod by seller? Top of the door folds up agains the wing and lower swings forward all the way up against the fuselage. I've never seen one like that before, but I've not been around many J-5s and none recently. Is it an STC or likely a field mod?

If I give this plane a thumbs up, my friend's IA who will be annualling it will likely come to take a look at it. I've cautioned him (friend) that knowing your IA and his expectations and knowing his experience with old fabric airplane is as important as know the airplane itself to avoid surprises.

At any rate, any good gouge on a J-5A would be helpful. Thanks.

Plane is listed on Barnstormers. It is painted OD.
