Hobbs meter

I have a J3 65 with no electric system. I had the bendix mags and installed a hour meter that picked up the impulse by wrapping a wire around the spark plug wire. I installed Slick mags and the wires are better shielded and it won't pick up the impulse.

I need a hobbs reading because it is a rental. Anyone know how else it can be done?
