I own a maintenance shop in Upstate NY and have a J3 in with high oil temp. We are a Cessna Service Center and don't usually work on Cubs. This one is modified to a C85 and the exhaust shroud on the rear cross over tube is hitting on the oil temp probe and oil screen housing. The owner said he has had this problem before and the mechanics just moved the shroud away. We tried this and still got the high oil temp. The owner said he didn't even need the shroud for cabin heat so we cut it away around the probe but still got a high oil temp. We have checked the gage and if anything it is reading low not high. My question is about the C85 modification. Is there a different exhaust required for the C85 with longer risers which would lower the entire system and move it away from the probe. Has anyone ever seen this problem before. There is less than 1/8 inch between the exhaust and the probe and the screen housing and that is because someone in the past has dented the exhaust to make it fit. If the exhaust was normal, it would not even fit.
Thanks for any help with this.
Doug
