After years of using a grey scale Garmin 196, I finally went to color, and bought the new Garmin 495. It has all the features of the, 496, except for the satelite radio interface with the ability to show the location of thunderstorms and other severe weather, and the built in full street map data base. The price is about $1,000 less.

The terrain avoidance screen is pretty neat - any terrain with an altitude within 100 feet of the aircraft altitude turns red.

The bread crumb track can be made different colors, or made invisible. The second picture shows a circle I made around the grass field in the third picture. The last picture is the track from traffic patterns at Front Royal. It can be seen that the direction of landing changed during the flight.

The unit is much lighter than the 196, has far more features, and has a much higher fun factor.
