Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve read a ton on this forum and learned a lot from everyone. I’m taking the plunge and will officially begin shopping for a Cub tomorrow when I look at a 1939 J-3 that is for sale for $50k. Rebuilt in 1999, has starter, C-85. Unknown type of brake or sealed strut status. Pics attached. No logs prior to 1999.
Questions for the members:
1. Plate in airplane shows “J3-C” and it’s equipped with a C-85-12F but the FAA registry shows the model as J-3L-65S. There’s a disconnect in the paperwork somewhere - any ideas or thoughts on this? How big an issue?
2. Airplane has a battery for a starter and lights, but no generator or alternator (a god thing!). Confirm there is no requirement for a transponder or ADS-B with only a battery?
3. Any takeaways from the attached pictures?
