As with everythinng else from my donor flying basketcase, I've removed a lot of paint from the engine mount and don't like what I see there. It looks like this is an original from 6 decades ago. Possibly from mild steel rather than 4130? In any case, it is somewhat rust pitted under the paint, just like the old fuselage. I know it's 5 bills plus for a new 4130 mount, but I think I may have to go that way. W and U are withing 70 bucks of each other. Any other suppliers of a good mount that costs less??
My AI looks at the pitting and shakes his head and says it would probably pass an annual, but "look at how beautiful the rest of your rebuild is." So that is his answer. I'm not just trying to keep an old Cub flying. It is a zero time airframe...not including wings yet...except for the engine mount.
Any thoughts, philosophical guidance, etc.?
There don't appear to by any actual bad spots or cracks, but just running a blade screw driver lightly along the tubes, the bare metal scratches up pretty easily. Not like with 4130.
