I’ve decided I need to -unfortunately- install an ELT in my family’s J3. It wasn’t under my care before but now that it is I want to be legal. Looking back through the logs the annuals for many many years have stated “ELT NOT INSTALLED” and I can’t find proof that there was a previous installation.

I looked at the previous threads as this appears to be an oft discussed item on here. I’m not completely against installing an external antenna but I’d rather not although unless something has changed it looks like I have two options:

1) find proof of a previous installation and reinstall a 121.5 ELT with co-located antenna (ex: ELB company models)

2) install a new 406 ELT with external antenna (mechanic was leaning towards Artex)

Does this about sum it up? What am I missing? Is there such thing as a temporary antenna installation that is legal, such as from my green moon roof or a strut?
