Elevator reinforcing tape?

I am just getting ready to tape the elevators and have a question. I have 1/2" reinforcing tape and the "rib" on the elevator is 1/8" of an inch wide. Do I need to cut down the reinforcing tape to 1/8" wide or just leave it at 1/2 and stitch around it? If you leave it at 1/2" wouldn't it pucker up when you stitch it? ???
