Interesting article in "Sport Aviation" on next year's Sweepstakes airplane.
In pertinent part :
"I recall Dad telling me that on December 8, 1941, he received a telegram from the War Department", Susan said. "Because the country was now at war he was instructed to separate the engine from the airframe and store them in separate locations."
It goes even farther.
"Dad and Joe were instructed to store the engine so many miles from the airframe. The Lycoming was kept under watchful eye by barrels of Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer in the basement of the tavern. Unfortunately, the government demanded a 24-hour armed guard around the airplane. Unable to afford that, Dad and Joe decided to sell their practically brand-new Cub..."
I had read that severe restrictions were placed on civilian aviation within 300 miles of any of our coastlines, but I have never seen anything about pulling the engines and armed guards!
