I just found a piece of paper in an old book on which I had compared the cost of the APG Army flying club vs owning my own airplane. Likely done in about 1973 for my wife.

For 100hr flying/year:

Flying Club,

100 hr. rent- $1030(don't know exactly where that came from as the C150 was $7/hr and 172's were $10-$12. I was flying the O1D Birdog at the time @ $11/hr) ????

Dues- $60

Extra driving- $50

Total- $1140

Owning(maybe the C120?) for 100hr flying/year:

Tie down- $180
Annual inspection- $100
Insurance- $100
engine fund- $100
Gas and oil- $300
Misc.- $100

Total- $880

I don't know what these were but I then added $180 and $60. Maybe int. on investment($3500 for the 120) and I don't know what the $60 was for but,

Grand total of $1120

A buck an hour for an overhaul fund and $3/hr for gas and oil...... ;D

Jack

PS. We did purchase the C120 about that time. It(and others) cost much more than I could have ever imagined..... The old military flying clubs before they were taken over by the government NAF activities and forced to purchase insurance etc, etc had to be the best flying deal ever...
