First let me admit this is very judgemental on my part, and admit I just don't embrace digital equipment be they cameras, phones, or PCs. I don't own a GPS. BUT, there is a student Sport Pilot at our airport that bought a European plastic LSA with all manner of navigation and autopilot gizmos in the panel. It has a 396 or 496 docked , but he also installed a 695. Gosh, he has 115 hours, 400 landings and has worn out three sets of tires and the nosewheel strut and no check ride yet. He placed a long piece of black tape vertically on the canopy in hopes it would help him stop touching down sideways. He has recently soloed and was planning his first crosscountry but was going to do it strictly on his two GPS just to satisfy the requirement. He brags that he can program the plane to fly the pattern. Am I wrong, or should he just turn all that stuff off and fly by looking outside or at a chart ? If I'm in the pattern with him I'd worry that he might not see me !
