I have WW II photos that show the radio call numbers painted in both flat black and flat Orange Yellow. Tech Order 07-1-1 dated 06/01/1942 called for the numbers to be painted black on camouflage aircraft and Orange Yellow on non-camouflage aircraft. Flat Orange Yellow was also authorized on camouflage aircraft. So you can take your choice on this one.
Since these numbers were most often added in the field that would explain the differences. Also some L-4 aircraft were not in combat zones and were considered training aircraft and would have born the yellow letters.
