I am in the process of starting restoration of 44-80487, Piper sn 12783. According to The fighting grasshopper she was 21-D in the spring of 45 serving 398th FA.
The wings was removed for recovering in 1979, but they vent up in flames in a hangar fire. She has been resting in a barn ever since.
I am missing her story between 1947, when she retired from USAAF, and 1958 when she started service for Telemark Flyselskap as an aerial photo platform on floats. She sank on a photo mission in the northern part of Norway in 1961. She has been flipped over a numerous times, but the goal is to get her back in the air in OD as 21-D. The frame have been repaired and modified to a J3ish airplane, so bringing it back to 44 standard may be to much. The aim is to be pretty close on the outside and practical for flying on the inside. I operate in class D airspace so radio and mode S transponder must be installed.
The frame has been to the hospital for x-ray and there will be some welding .
I guess I start with an inventory . And then talk to Mr. Smith.
Regards
OJ
