Turns out the paperwork on my A-75-8 is not up to snuff. The engine log documents the engine installed onto my 1946 J-3 in 2006 with no previous hours log on the engine. The entry indicates that they replaced the valve guides, ground the seats, & cleaned and replaced the valves. They also cleaned the pistons, checked ring gaps, installed the rings and re-bushed rocker arms. Finally 3 months later the next entry notes installation of new slick mags and the engine was installed into aircraft. The annual engine log was signed off in 2007 by a different A&P. Each annual till last year was signed off with typical annual notes by a third A&P. The log book currently notes TTE unknown, SMOH 357.4.

I went to an A&P IA for my annual this year and he pointed out that since there is no indication of the condition or time on the rest of the engine the engine could be unsafe. It was suggested that we take it apart and have the critical items sent out and inspected so we know what the total condition is. I agreed.

A friend recommended my guy as very experienced Cub A&P IA. Yesterday we removed the mags and there was a hole drilled through the case behind one of the mags. The IA said he had never seen this and did not know what it was for or if it was legal. He suspected after looking things over that the hole may have been drilled to make clearance for the Mag on that side. The case is a little deeper under the other mag. Apparently both mags are impulse mags. I think I am saying this correctly. Has anyone heard of this hole being required? We would like to know for sure before we send the case halves out for inspection. Both are 4333 Slicks. Thanks Joe B
